Nounalcoholism
Related termsFrom Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Alcoholism is a term with multiple and sometimes conflicting definitions to refer to the consumption of alcoholic beverages. In common and historic usage, alcoholism refers to any condition that results in the continued consumption of alcoholic beverages, despite health problems and negative social consequences. Modern medical definitions describe alcoholism as a disease and addiction which results in a persistent use of alcohol despite negative consequences. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, alcoholism, also referred to as dipsomania described a preoccupation with, or compulsion toward the consumption of, alcohol and/or an impaired ability to recognize the negative effects of excessive alcohol consumption. Although not all of these definitions specify current and on-going use of alcohol as a qualifier for alcoholism, some do, as well as remarking on the long-term effects of consistent, heavy alcohol use, including dependence and symptoms of withdrawal. While the ingestion of alcohol is, by definition, necessary to develop alcoholism, the use of alcohol does not predict the development of alcoholism. It is estimated that 9% of the general population is predisposed to alcoholism based on genetic factors. The quantity, frequency and regularity of alcohol consumption required to develop alcoholism varies greatly from person to person. In addition, although the biological mechanisms underpinning alcoholism are uncertain, some risk factors, including social environment, stress, emotional health, genetic predisposition, age, and gender have been identified. For example, those who consume alcohol at an early age, by age 16 or younger, are at a higher risk of alcohol dependence or abuse. Also, studies indicate that the proportion of men with alcohol dependence are higher than that of the proportion of women, 7% and 2.5% respectively, although women are more vulnerable to long-term consequences of alcoholism. Around 90% of adults in United States consume alcohol and more than 700,000 of them are treated daily for alcoholism. Professor David Zaridze, who led the international research team, calculated that alcohol had killed three million Russians since 1987. "a disordered or incorrectly functioning organ, part, structure, or system of the body resulting from the effect of genetic or developmental errors, infection, poisons, nutritional deficiency or imbalance, toxicity, or unfavorable environmental factors; illness; sickness; ailment." Alcoholism doesn't fit this definition. As a consequence of alcoholism you'll have diseases that fit the definition (like cirrosis). I don't think addictions are diseases. You drink because you want to. Nobody is forcing you, no virus is making you do that. You have to use a lot of will power to go get the booze and drink it. Q. I was just wondering about this since many smokers I know are also heavy drinkers. Are the two habits interrelated? Would undergoing treatment for alcoholism also banish the individual's habit for smoking? Asked by ahtziri s - Wed Jul 18 05:06:51 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments A. Alcohol consumption and smoking are actually interrelated. The person's intake of nicotine happens to increase one's craving for alcohol and alcohol boosts the effects of smoking. This explains why smokers are usually drinkers too. If the person is really dependent upon alcohol and cigarettes, addiction treatment is needed. However, treating just alcoholism does not mean that the smoking will go away too. Treating both simultaneously will be the best way to go as treating only one of the two only ups the chances of relapse. Bad childhood, wrong decision or a break a dramatic break down. Asked by davidbuckey@btinternet.com - Fri Sep 12 20:22:50 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. Wow, this is a huge topic. And it probably would get more responses in the health care section of YA. There used to be a lot of debate as to whether or not alcoholism was a mental illness, a character flaw, or a disease such as diabetes or Alzheimers. Today, most physicians, and certainly the AA community, believe that alcoholism is a disease. In some people, it begins with the very first drink they take. In others, it may not show up until after years of drinking. Bottom line: if you don't have the genetic (?) predisposition for the disease, you will likely not become an alcoholic. The reasons (pathways might be a better word here) for becoming an alcoholic are almost as varied as the number of alcoholics.
