From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Europe (pronounced /ˈjɜrəp/, /ˈjʊərəp/) is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the westernmost peninsula of Eurasia, Europe is generally divided from Asia to its east by the water divide of the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, and by the Caucasus Mountains to the southeast. Europe is washed upon to the north by the Arctic Ocean and other bodies of water, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean Sea, and to the southeast by the Black Sea and the waterways connecting it to the Mediterranean. Yet the borders for Europe—a concept dating back to classical antiquity—are somewhat arbitrary, as the term continent can refer to a cultural and political distinction or a physiographic one. Europe is the world's second-smallest continent by surface area, covering about 10,180,000 square kilometres (3,930,000 sq mi) or 2% of the Earth's surface and about 6.8% of its land area. Of Europe's approximately 50 states, Russia is the largest by both area and population, while the Vatican City is the smallest. Europe is the third most populous continent after Asia and Africa, with a population of 731 million or about 11% of the world's population; however, according to the United Nations (medium estimate), Europe's share may fall to about 7% in 2050. Europe, in particular Ancient Greece, is often considered to be the birthplace of Western culture. It played a predominant role in global affairs from the 16th century onwards, especially after the beginning of colonialism. Between the 17th and 20th centuries, European nations controlled at various times the Americas, most of Africa, Oceania, and large portions of Asia. Both World Wars were ignited in Central Europe, greatly contributing to a decline in European dominance in world affairs by the mid-20th century as the United States and Soviet Union took prominence. During the Cold War Europe was divided along the Iron Curtain between NATO in the West and the Warsaw Pact in the East. European integration led to the formation of the Council of Europe and the European Union in Western Europe, both of which have been expanding eastward since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. GNU Free Documentation License Is Eurail better or just go to europe and buy train tickets even when you plan to travel 4-5 countries? Q. We are planning to go to europe in a year and wondering if Eurail is the best option. It is obviously not the cheapest option. Is it better to just go to europe and buy train tickets for travelling within a country and between different countries. Also, is it easy to buy tickets or they are over booked? Asked by dddkkk - Fri Nov 14 15:42:09 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is impossible to tell whether a Eurail pass will work out better for you or just buying tickets, unless we know which countries, which towns and what time of day and kind of train you want to take. Mostly if you book early, (in Germany, England and maybe also other countries) you can easily beat the price of a travel pass. But some countries do not sell cheap tickets in advance and often people do not want to book ahead. Unless you plan to travel in July and August or on Friday or Sunday/MOnday morning you will not find the trains completely booked. But the cheapest seats will only be available (if at all) for the less popular trains. (Which might just fit your travel plans.) It is a kind of bet, you bet that you can beat the price… [cont.] Answered by Willeke - Fri Nov 14 16:36:56 2008 How does universal healthcare in Europe work? Q. My professor today mentioned that most European countries have universal healthcare. This means that everyones healthcare is provided by the state, correct? How much more money do people pay in taxes in Europe than in the U.S.? It would have to be more since their healthcare is covered, right? Like most people I thought that there was a huge tax burden in Britain, but after coming here I now think that's not the case.We pay two forms of tax from our wages:Income tax and National insurance. Your income tax is tax like everywhere else, national insurance pays for your pension and healthcare. I have lived in England all my life up till now and I will fiercely defend our healthcare system, the NHS (national health service). In thanks largely to the effort of our heroic doctors and nurses (and all other staff) the NHS survives...the healthcare is nothing like as bad as people make out, and there are no long waiting lists anymore (now if you're waiting more than six months for routine surgery… [cont.] Answered by Dazedandconfused - Fri Oct 5 19:48:59 2007 How much would a trip to europe cost for a month?
Q. I am planning a trip to europe in may and i was wondering how much i will be spending, i already plan on taking $2,516 (516 for the plane ticket) and i was wondering if that would be enough money to take. It would help if someone showed me what some of the prices are for food, water, soda, and most of the common stuff you would buy on a vacation, keep in mind for a month. Asked by ITMAN - Tue Mar 17 18:23:44 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hey there! I am in the first planning stages for a 3 month backpacking trip through Europe, leaving early next year and here is a site I found recently. If are planning on backpacking on a budget you could probably get by on between $40-$70 USD a day, I am planning on $80/day though, not including eurorail passes and plane tickets. This means staying in hostels and eating cheap (most of the time), but this does allow for taxi's, and tour/attraction fees. Also you'll need to buget for your gear before you go, plus passport and other documents. Have fun and be safe!
