Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a worldwide fellowship of men and women who share a desire to stop drinking alcohol. AA suggests members completely abstain from alcohol, regularly attend meetings with other members, and follow its program to help each other with their common purpose; to help members "stay sober and help other alcoholics achieve sobriety." AA created the twelve-step program used by similar recovery groups like Al-Anon, an auxiliary group for friends and family members of alcoholics; and Narcotics Anonymous, a group for substance abusers who may or may not also identify as alcoholics. Although AA's attrition rates are high, it can be effective as a treatment for alcoholism.

why do they call it alcoholics anonymous?
Q. why do they call it alcoholics anonymous when the first thing you do is stand up and say hi my name is Bob and I'm an alcoholic! it's stupid!!

A. AA's aren't anonymous with each other, silly! Of course we know each other's names, and why we are there. We're anonymous OUTSIDE of AA. So if I saw you at the store, I wouldn't holler out "hey, that AA meeting last night was great! Aren't you glad you don't drink anymore?!" Especially if you live in a small town, it's important for some people to keep their anonymity at work, etc. We're also anonymous in the press. You'll notice most long-term sober celebrities in interviews will reference "12-step program" and not AA by name.

A. AA is no place for a 16 year old. AA was designed to be for skid row alcoholics. You may drink, you may be a problem drinker, but I doubt you are a full blown alcoholic at 16. Besides, AA isn't about quitting drinking, it's about finding God and getting redemption. You're supposed to have lost everything before joining AA. In the old days, they wouldn't let a newcomer in if he was wearing a wristwatch because he hadn't lost everything. Getting in trouble for drinking isn't anywhere near the same thing as being an alcoholic.

I have a question about the big book of Alcoholics Anonymous?
Q. I had sex with a 17 year old girl that goes to AA. She is now claiming I im[impregnated her, but I didn't. I stuck it in the other hole. My sponsor says I have to admit that I impregnated the girl or else I will drink again. Where in the big book does it say I have to admit to something that I didn't do?
